I thought I would start with one of the terrier breeds I know well but will blog about all of them.
Yorkshire Terriers are commonly known as Yorkies.
Their coats are typically black or grey on the body and their faces are golden brown or in some instances snow white. They have medium sized eyes and with the look of love in them they can turn anybodys heart to jelly.. (Be strong and dont give in).
Yorkies weigh from around 600g to 10kg and they are generally slim in build.
They have the most beautiful silky soft hair and can grow until it touches the ground but it high in maintenance. Of my two yorkies I let them cut Rusty’s hair very short and Chloe gets the normal yorkie cut.
They are great companions but requires a lot of attention and a little exercise to stay in shape. Their personalities vary and they are generally very passive in nature but can also put up quite a fuss. Individual dogs will differ, but they are generally intelligent, independent and courageous.
They do not like to be challenged or abused by children and I would caution you when around abusive children. Despite their small size, if continually attacked, like all dogs, they pack a surprisingly powerful bite. They seem to enjoy life in a relaxed, slow environment and thus make a good pet for the elderly. They can be very energetic but requires a lot of downtime and often in privacy.
Yorkies may seem rather unintelligent at times when they are playful and yapping but they can be easily trained to performed simple tasks. They do not adapt to changing their environment that easily and it will take some time for them to settle in.
A healthy Yorkie will live between 10 – 15 years and undersized Yorkies tend to have a shorter life span.
It seems that most classifications for Yorkies are done under Toy and not Terrier although they are part of the terrier family. I think this is mostly due to their size. There origin is from England.
It seems the most important thing is for the owner to be the pack leader, if not you will have lots of problems with your Yorkies as they will think they can rule the house. They require proper boundaries and needs to know who is in charge. They also seem to be difficult to house train and this will pose a challenge if not done as part of puppy training.
Yorkies are adorable and will definitely provide some excitement in your life.
