Puppy House Training – Choosing to Train Your Puppy Indoor or Outdoor

There are two methods that you can use to house train your puppy – indoor training or outdoor training. Which one should you use? Which house training method works best for you and your puppy? Well, it pretty much depends on your lifestyle and the type of your dog.

Outdoor puppy house training can be a good choice, if you happen to work from home and have easy access to outdoor areas. You have the flexibility to put work aside and take your puppy out for his bathroom break.

However, taking your puppy for a stroll and potty break outdoor can be troublesome if you’re staying in a high-rise apartment block. Indoor house training may be more suitable for you if you have difficulty leaving the house or move around freely due to your health condition.

If your dog is from a small-sized breed, then indoor potties suit him better. In this case, indoor potty training is right for him. Indoor house training may have some disadvantages for bigger dogs, one of it being that their waste is bigger in size! If your dog is a male, eventually he will start lifting his leg when he pees. He is unlikely to aim accurately at his potty, whether it’s a litter box or layers of newspapers. What you’ll get is a smelly puddle on the floor.

While it’s possible to retrain a outdoor house trained puppy to potty indoor, and the other way round, you shouldn’t let your puppy have two bathrooms. You’ll have to decide one and only potty place for your puppy.

For instance, if your final objective is to have your puppy eliminate outside the house, then you should focus on outdoor house training from the start. You can spread some newspapers on the floor of your living area; in case you’re not at home to take your puppy out to do his business, at least your floors are protected from his poop and pee. The last thing you want is to see your puppy mess up his bathroom manners.
