What if you had to eat the same food every day? Is it the same for dogs?  How would you feel eating the same thing day after day after day…

I wonder why dogs don’t mind eaten the same food every day. What makes them different from us humans? Don’t they sometimes look at the food and think: “Yuk I don’t like this, what was she THINKING!”
Why is it that dogs don’t mind eating the same food on a daily basis?

I know that our yorkies get very ill if you give them other dog food. Are they just more sensitive than other dogs?
What about people that feed their dog’s normal human food. Does it make a difference and does anyone know whether it is bad for the dogs? I do believe you should not feed dogs one of the following things but I am uncertain as to why this is: Chocolate, Grapes and Garlic.

I am also assuming that different types of dog food are appropriate depening on your terrier. Please post the types of food you feed your dog(s) as I think we can all learn from this.

  1. Hello Again!!

Oh, food topic!! One of my favourites!!

Most dogs, any breed, will get an upset stomach if food is suddenly changed over as the ingrediants will be so different. My dogs have always have different foods so are used to this and don’t get ill, but majority of dogs start life on one brand of food for several weeks, then you needs to ween them to a new one over a week or two to help their digestive system cope.

Dogs are natural scavangers so will eat food when given the opportunity – in their minds they don’t know when the next meal is coming as a guarantee so will eat when given food, hence eating the same food every day as it’s better then leaving it and possibly not getting another meal!

My dogs are Raw Fed, so they in effect have human food – meat, fish, veggies, potatoes, rice, some fruit, dairy etc and they thrive on it and are healthier then when on a leading pet dog food!! But I ensure they have a balanced diet. Dogs 30-40 years ago didn’t have so much choice in dog foods and were mainly fed table scraps and had less illness then they do today, so human food can’t have been that bad for them!

Grapes, raisins, human chocolate, onions – all bad for dogs due to toxins inside them that in huge proportion wouldn’t be great for us either, but being bigger we can handle it better!! Garlic is fine for dogs and is often in treats – however my girl can’t have garlic as it heats the blood and she has epilepsy so the combination is asking for trouble!!

Most breeds of dog can have most types of food – you can get larger kibble size for larger breeds, softer for veterans etc. The main difference is maintenance food for pet dogs, working pet food for very active dogs. If you feed your dog a working food and they are just indoors all day getting one or two walks then they will become hyperactive as there will be too much protein in their diet and no release for the energy!! The only real big difference is greyhounds have a greyhound food that is mixed with water, often as retired greyhounds don’t have very good teeth so can’t often eat normal dry kibble.

Hope that answers a few queries for you!!

  2. This is fantastic…

I think one of the things I have done really well is feeding them the right food.

I always thought it is a bad thing feeding them human food but I do think the secret is not feeding them both.

Thank you for all the valuable information you have provided us. We are looking forward to your next post.
